What is the Role?

The Head of Commercial – Electric Vehicle (EV) is responsible for leading the development & implementation of our commercial strategy, governance and contract management practices relative to our Electric Vehicle sector with the aim to build a market leading EV hub portfolio throughout the UK & Ireland. This role reports directly into the Commercial Director.

You’ll work with a range of internal & external stakeholders to develop opportunities, provide the commercial rigour, manage risks & opportunities, and ultimately play a key role in wining work. Throughout, you’ll ensure appropriate contractual terms are in place and financial returns are secured. This will involve the development of Land Acquisition, Joint Venture, Partnership, Profit Share, Joint Development, and more traditional NEC3/4 Services, Supplier Agreements and Product Agreements, amongst others.

We work in a matrix/ multi-vector environment, so as Head of Commercial – EV, you’ll support the Sector Director and SSE Corporate business unit (such as the Corporate Finance teams) as the lead commercial interface with key policy makers & influencing stakeholders.

You won’t do all this alone, as Head of Commercial – EV, you’ll guide and manage a team of commercial managers and modellers. Part, or all, of your team will likely be remote to you as we provide services across the UK, therefore some travel is required within the UK.

What do I need?

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • An experienced professional in a relevant field such as Procurement, Law, Finance, Quantity Surveying or similar – ideally, you’ll be degree (or equivalent) qualified but this isn’t essential if you have the demonstrable expertise.
  • Knowledge & understanding of the utility/ power market, more specifically the EV sector. Ideally, experience negotiating special vehicle purpose agreements/ joint ventures/ collaboration agreements/ other forms of bespoke arrangements. Any experience with land acquisition/ renewables environment would be beneficial in role.
  • Knowledge & understanding in the law of contracts; specifically of NEC3/ NEC4 and JCT forms of contract. Able to steer skilled pre- & post-contract activities, both upstream and downstream
  • Commercial acumen: an entrepreneurial and solutions-focused mindset where you make innovative decisions based on data analysis & risk (assessments) to succeed in an emerging environment of solution sales/ development
  • Communicate, influence and manage the expectations of a range of internal and external stakeholders, at times making sure technical information is presented accurately and effectively understood by the audience.
  • Comfortable guiding & developing high performing teams
