What is the Role?

We have an excellent opportunity for a commercially aware person to lead, manage and develop a Southern Regional System Planning and Investment team within our SSEN Distribution business. Your team will be at the front line of Connections & Diversion customer enquiries, and you’ll provide technical expertise at meetings with large commercial and industrial clients and consultant to resolve complaints and drive improvements.

In this role you’ll:-

  • assess network performance, asset condition and network capacity and make recommendations for improvements to meet the net-zero challenge and future requirements of SSEN.
  • represent SSE as a technical expert at UK-wide industry forums and working parties, and contribute to the development of new/revised Engineering recommendations and Engineering Technical Reports.
  • allocate and manage technical assessments, network modelling, collection and interpretation of large volumes of complex network data, and present this in an easily digestible format for internal and external stakeholders and regulators, including OFGEM.
  • take key accountability for managing and developing investment programmes to meet statutory requirements and ensure the network is fit for purpose.

What do I need?

You will have extensive experience in electrical engineering. Essential to this role will be your technical understanding of Distribution Networks and Standards, and the ability to carry out complex network modelling. You’ll be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Ability to produce, review and assess complex technical reports and interpret large volumes of complex data to display in a digestible format to stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills, able to take a project from concept through to delivery, allocating work throughout the team to meet the customers’ requirements and budget.
  • Leadership skills to engage, develop and manage the team in accordance with the SSE Leadership Blueprint and safety culture.
  • Financial management and commercially astute.
  • Ability to conduct a cost benefit analysis for the strategic investment case.

About the Department

Our System Planning Engineering Team is critical in building the energy network of the future. System Planning are responsible for developing the capability of our networks from low voltage to 132kV to meet our customer needs, net-zero decarbonisation and the connection of low carbon technologies utilising a mix of flexibility and traditional reinforcement. This is the start of one of the most exciting periods for the development of electricity networks because due to unprecedented growth in demand and change in utilisation by green energy providers.
