Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations – Inverness, Aberdeen, or Perth. We would also be interested in applications from individuals in the Western Isles where the projects are located.
The role requires management of and direct interface with site teams, and you will be expected to be predominantly on-site to provide the support and guidance as set out below. This will be one of our HVDC HUBs – Peterhead, Spittal, Beauly, or Lewis.
Salary: £58,100 – £87,100 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role
We are looking for a Lead Construction Manager to join our SSEN Transmission, Offshore Delivery Team to help deliver our High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) projects, which form part of our Pathway to 2030 Programme. Reporting into the Deputy Project Director, you will be responsible for the construction of one of our onshore based HVDC Hub sites. You will lead the construction teams to consistently represent the business across your assigned site, ensuring site activities are carried out safely and in accordance with the specified contract requirements and SSEN Transmission policies and procedures. This will include managing a multi-disciplinary project team and framework supply chain partners under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework.
The scale of our portfolio of projects are large and is likely to grow in the coming years, meaning there will be opportunities for progression within the business.
You will
– Be accountable for the construction of the various packages at one of our HVDC Converter Station sites, ensuring they are constructed safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards
– Work closely with the Project Management team and manage the supply chain to uphold the highest level of safety performance and ensure the project is refined, constructed and commissioned in accordance with regulatory requirements, whilst championing SSEs Safety Golden Rules.
– Support the Project Management team in derisking delivery through a successful ECI stage, and provide leadership and subject matter expertise during the construction stage, including on supply chain management, interface management, schedule management, and change control
– Provide functional management and leadership to the construction team, supporting recruitment and development of team members, such as Construction Site Managers
– Build and maintain productive and enduring relationships with contractors, stakeholders, and communities to support the sustainable delivery of the projects that you are responsible for
You have
– Proven experience of leading site teams and overseeing large-scale, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects, including HVDC Converters in a Delivery position.
– Extensive knowledge and experience in the pre-construction and construction phases of HVDC Converter station delivery, including the ability to identify and manage interfaces across design, civil, building, and OEM packages.
– An understanding of NEC forms of contracts including previous experience fulfilling the role of NEC Supervisor, with oversight of site inspection and test activities required to confirm works are implemented in accordance with the Works Information.
– An understanding of being the ‘Client’ from a CDM and contractual perspective in construction management processes and systems.
– Hold or have recently held certificates for site access including CSCS / EUSR or similar and site management qualifications including NEBOSH, IOSH, SMSTS (5-day) or equivalent.
