Distribution has an ambitious and balanced plan to power communities to net zero, and to support the delivery of this we are looking to recruit an Operational Technology (OT) Telecoms Design Engineer focused on IP & Data networking technologies to support our expanding OT Telecoms Design team.

About the Role

The Operational Technology (OT) team within Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, design, build and support the industrial control, communication and monitoring systems that are used to operate and manage the primary assets within the electricity network.

This specific role focuses on the design of our operational IP data network along with inputting into the strategy & long term target architecture to ensure all our sites are fully connected, secure and operational.

You will provide project support via a technical assurance function along with delivering your own data network projects that enhance the capabilities of the data network that directly support SSEN’s critical national infrastructure.

Key responsibilities for the role will include:

– Creation of and input to technical strategy, longer term target architectures and ensuring SSEN have documented standards for all the data network.

– Owning a significant portfolio of services of data network technologies where you will become the subject matter expert along with creating target architectures.

– Developing and producing plans and designs for future projects and initiatives across the business, acting as a subject matter expert for any enquiries received regarding our data network.

– Continually keep an eye on the telecommunications and industrial controls market, ensuring we are utilising the tools available to us and exploring new and innovative ways to improve our networks.

– Contributing and supporting our Technology training plans to support our goal of continual improvement although training within our team is something we all contribute towards.

What do I need?

– A keen understanding and strong commitment to learn about almost all aspects of telecommunications infrastructure around data networking.

– Excellent knowledge and/or hands on experience in the design & operation of communications networks, ideally within a regulated or OT environment such as ours. Key technologies would include MPLS, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP and a deep understanding of building scalable & secure networks using the above technologies.

– Experience of migrating networks from older technologies to newer IP-based technologies would be a distinct advantage as would a low level understanding of practically enhancing the cyber security of network infrastructure.

– Strong experience in data networking over multiple vendors & platforms with a track record of learning new technologies and producing target architectures – an ability to train others in data network is desirable.

– Strong verbal and written communication skills to liaise with stakeholders at all levels and be able to convey complex messages in an easy to understand manner as well as excellent problem solving skills and organisation skills with a keen eye for detail.
